The 10 Year Anniversary Of The September 11 Attacks On The World Trade Center
As we approach the 10 year anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center we recall the atrocities that occurred on that fateful day in 2001. We are overcome with sympathy for those who were at Ground Zero. For all, the day started out as usual. The alarm woke many, while others were roused by a spouse or children. Preparations for the day began. It was time to go to work.
There were some who woke late. Others were not feeling well and decided to stay home. Still others stopped to buy a cup of coffee or a newspaper and ran into a friend that held them up for a few fateful moments. Most were at their work stations. No one saw them coming. In the wildest of dreams who could ever imagine there would be two airplanes heading straight into the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
Within seconds enormous clouds of black smoke filled the air following the thunderous sound of the airplane as it rammed into the first tower. The few very short minutes that lapsed before the second plane struck the remaining tower was all that meant life or death for a fortunate few. Hoards of people were in the streets crying out in disbelief. Many were in shock and still could not comprehend what had happened. Hundreds were fleeing the burning towers; coughing and choking on the putrid smoke that consumed the stairwells.
A short time later the towers gave way and imploded leaving a mass of humanity trapped in the rubble. Firemen, policemen, ambulance drivers, and paramedics rushed to the scene. With no concern for their life these brave men and women set about their duties of rescuing those buried beneath the crumbling towers. For each one that was saved many more lost their lives on that horrendous day.
Since September 11, 2001 the world has mourned the loss of many at the hands of terrorist groups. Although Osama Bin Laden has been targeted as the leader of this destruction there in no real proof that he was behind the attacks. Regardless of the proof we need to blame any group, we know that the these people are fulfilling a command to strike fear in the hearts of America and other countries around the world.
As the 10th anniversary of the attacks approaches there will be many things done here in the US, as well as abroad, in memory of the lives that were lost that fateful day. The USS New York is a large sailing vessel that was built from the scrap metal of the Twin Towers. New skyscrapers are being built. Ground Zero holds the Memorial Plaza which is in tribute to those who lost their lives and the many brave people who aided in the rescue effort. President Obama will be on site to consecrate this memorial.
All over the United States groups will gather to remember those who lost their lives. For all the people who will work together in remembrance, the individual men and women of our country will also add their personal stamp. One such person is Joe Castillo. A master in the art of using sand on a backlit surface, he uses his talent of Sand Story Performances to remind us of what happened that day. Acting alone as a sole performer or with orchestra's adding drama to his work, Mr. Castillo has used his sand art to commemorate the attacks of September 11th. It is not to instill fear but to recall the courage of thousands who acted with heroic bravery on the day the world changed forever.
