Why Do We Take Communion?
Communion like baptism is a covenant that Christians have with God. It sets us apart from the World and it is commonly called the Lord's Supper but it is by no means common.
Paul explains the purpose of communion and the consequences of taking it unworthy. 1st Corinthians 11:23-30 it reads, for I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, take, eat, this is my body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me. In the same manner, He also took the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the New Covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it in remembrance of Me. For as often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. Therefore, whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this reason, many are weak and sick among you and many sleep (die).
Before we take communion, we should ask for forgiveness of our sins. However, it does not stop there; we should remember the Lord and what He has done for us. His body was broken for us so that we could be healed. Isaiah 53:5 tells us that He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement for our peace was upon Him and by His strips, we are healed. In Matthew 26:27-28 it reads, then He took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to them saying, drink from it all of you, for this is my blood of the New Covenant which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
When we are taking communion, we should reflex on what Jesus did for us. If we do not we would be taking it unworthy of Him which can cause sickness and death for us. If there is sickness among us, we should consider the manner by which we taking it. If we are doing it unworthy of Him, we can straighten it out and we can be healed.
Unbelievers should not take communion because they have not part in the body of Christ. If they do, they would be trying to make a mockery of God and He will not be mocked. Therefore, they would only be bringing condemnation upon themselves.
Taking communion should be a solemn occasion but after it is done there should be rejoicing for the great and mighty things that the Lord has done for us.
