Top Five Batsmen to Look Out for in 2011 Cricket World Cup

The tenth edition of the cricket World Cup is in progress and in this piece we discuss the top five batsmen to look out for in the tournament.

Sachin Tendulkar
No batting list in the cricket world can ever be complete without the name of the maestro Sachin Tendulkar. He has featured in five World Cup tournaments so far and this will be a record sixth time he will be playing in the tournament, equalling a record set by Javed Miandad. He will be India's lynchpin and one of those who can change things around with his ability bat either freely or through the entire duration of the innings. He has five World Cup centuries and 47 overall in the ODI format of the game and will be playing in his last World Cup this time.

Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting is the captain of the Australian as well apart from being one of the best ever batsmen in all formats of the game. He has been around since the 1996 World Cup but what makes it special for him is that he is the only player in the history of the game to have been a part of three World Cup winning squads and captained the side in two of them. What stirs the pot further is that he comes into the tournament with a lot of things going against him - a lack of form, injury issues and a loss of the Ashes.

Jacques Kallis
If one were to ask who is the best all-rounder that the game has ever produced, the answer would probably be Gary Sobers. Jacques Kallis would come a close-second in the list. And not without reason. Kallis has been the backbone of the South African batting for years now and despite all his fitness issues, he trains rather hard to be able to send down his quota of ten overs with ease. He will bat at the number three position and with Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith at the top of the innings, will be the player to look out for.

Virender Sehwag
He sees ball and he hits it. Uncomplicated as he can be. And that is where he will serve the Indian team as their opening batsman to partner Tendulkar at the top of the innings. While his record in the World Cup cricket has been anything but good, one gets the sense that this could well be his tournament to remember and he will look to ensure that he can rake up some big scores.

Kumar Sangakkara
He leads the Sri Lankan team, he keeps wickets for them and he is also their best batsman by a distance. Kumar Sangakara does all his duties with aplomb and will look to ensure that he can guide his side to a win as well. Sri Lanka are the pre-tournament favourites and will need every bit of the captain's performances at the top of the innings to ensure that they can get going in their home tournament.
